Tulare County New Home Information

Tulare County is located in the Central Valley south of Fresno. New home residents enjoy the Sequoia National Park located in the county, part of Kings Canyon National Park, in its northeast corner (shared with Fresno County), and part of Mount Whitney, on its eastern border (shared with Inyo County). The county is named for Tulare Lake, once the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes and now drained.

New home communities have added to the County's growing population of 360,000. The Eastern half of the County is comprised primarily of public lands within the Sequoia National Park, National Forest, and the Mineral King, Golden Trout, and Domelands Wilderness areas. Opportunities for all-season outdoor recreation include: hiking, water and snow skiing, fishing, white water rafting and boating.

Visalia, the County seat, is the gateway to Sequoia National Park and a variety of recreational activities. New home residents in the city, with a population of 93,000 are within a four hour drive of either San Francisco or Los Angeles, and a two and a half hour drive of California's central coastline. Its family-oriented lifestyle and affordable housing have proven attractive to new home residents from all areas of the state and country.

In 2001, Tulare became the most productive county in the U.S. in terms of agricultural revenues at $ 3.5 billion annually, surpassing Fresno County, which held the spot for over two decades. Milk brings in the most revenue for the county, typically more than $1 billion a year annually. Oranges, grapes, and other cattle-related commodities also bring in hundreds of millions of dollars annually. In addition to substantial packing / shipping operations, light and medium manufacturing plants are increasing in number.

Due to the importance of agriculture in the county as well as its location in the state, the city of Tulare (in Tulare County) has been the home of the annual World Ag Expo, the world's largest agricultural exposition, since 1968.

Nationally protected areas in the region include: Blue Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, Pixley National Wildlife Refuge, Sequoia National Park, and parts of: the Giant Sequoia National Monument, Inyo National Forest, Kings Canyon National Park, and Sequoia National Forest.

An influential contribution to Tulare County and its community resident pride is minor league sports like the baseball Visalia Oaks of the class-A California League, two teams of the Minor League Football Association in Tulare and Visalia, and four teams of the Porterville Fresno Basketball League based in Porterville.

New home neighborhood residents send their children to 10 high school districts and 43 elementary school districts in Tulare County. Students pursuing higher education locally attend the College of the Sequoias or Porterville College.
