Landscaping to Survive – and Thrive – in the Drought
By Mark Forster of Dudek
Southern California residents are likely to see water cutbacks and possibly higher waters rates come this summer.
A federal court has curtailed water deliveries to southern Cailfornia from northern California due to environmental factors in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta The Colorado River, the other major source of imported water to Southern California, has experienced drought conditions for eight of the last nine years
With outdoor landscaping accounting for approximately 70% of the typical household water bill, new homeowners may want to consider some water-smart approaches when they plan their landscapes.
Most local water districts now provide rebates for the following:
Weather-based irrigation controllers automatically adjust the irrigation schedule to account for changing weather and plant types. Up to 13,500 gallons of water a year can be saved. Rebates start at $80.
Rotating sprinkler nozzles apply water more slowly and uniformly to prevent over watering and encourage healthy plant growth. They use 20 percent less water than conventional spray heads. Rebates start at $4 a nozzle.
Synthetic turf saves time by eliminating the need to mow, weed and trim as well as eliminating the need to water. Rebates start at 30-cents a square foot.
For brand new landscaping, plant selection is key. Many new home developers landscape their model homes to the California Friendly Landscape program approved by Southern California’s Metropolitan Water district. Ask the sales person at the development if the models are California Friendly. You can also get ideas on how to plant your landscape using California Friendly techniques at
