Imperial County's new home communities span over the area's 4,597 square miles, bordering on Mexico to the south, Riverside County to the north, San Diego County on the west, and the State of Arizona on the east. The terrain varies from 235 feet below sea level at the Salton Sea to 4,548 feet at Blue Angel Peak. The Colorado River forms the county's eastern boundary. Two notable geographic features are found in the county, the Salton Sea, at 235 feet (72 m) below sea level, and the Algodones Dunes, one of the largest dune fields in America. Scenes from Star Wars were filmed in the Imperial dunes. Protected areas include part of the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge and the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge.
New home residents enjoy the hot and dry climate, ranging from lows in the mid 30's in January to highs of 110+ in July and August. Imperial County, originally part of San Diego County, was founded August 7, 1907. Considered one of the newest California counties, it is part of the El Centro, California Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Imperial County.
There are 65 schools in 16 districts in Imperial County. Among them there are 24 elementary schools serving k-6th grade, 10 elementary schools serving k-8, 10 middle schools and 8 high schools. An impressive 49% of all Imperial County schools met the API growth targets in comparison to 45% of all California schools. The Imperial Unified School District includes a number of California Distinguished Schools: Imperial High, Frank Wright Middle School, Ben Hulse Elementary and Westside School all have been previously named Distinguished Schools. Now, T.L. Waggoner and El Centro's Margaret Hedrick Elementary, one of three campuses in Imperial County this year have been named a California Distinguished School.
